How to maintain your fresh breath during ramadan!

During the islamic month of ramadan, a Muslim will fast from dawn to sunset for each day of the month. The individual will ingest no food or drink and this will lead us to a very tiny problem comparing to Great Reward during this holy month, which is Bad Breath!

We’ve all experienced bad breath in Ramadan either from others or ourselves. The main reason behind malodour is an increase in the concentration of sulphur containing compounds present in the oral cavity with time when a patient is fasting causing a bad breath, which may be misdiagnosed as being associated with poor oral hygiene or oral disease.

So what can we do to reduce or eliminate bad breath whilst fasting?

Here are some practical tips

  • Clean your tongue with a special scraper and yes, they usually exist on the back of your head brush!
  • Brush your teeth as everyday you do, just be careful not to swallow water or tooth paste.
  • Floss in between your teeth and you can use unscented floss.
  • Miswak is a traditional and natural alternative to the modern tooth brush. It is made from a twig of the Salvadora persica tree. Siwak has been highly recommended by Our Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) as it has many medical benefits.
  • Try to drink lots of Water during the evening and suhur time.
